Uganda Buka Bula Natural

This coffee is sourced from two adjacent and high-altitude coffee areas, Bukalasi and Bulambuli, located on the slopes of Mt Elgon, in the Bugisu sub-region of Eastern Uganda. The meticulous attention to detail that goes into the processing of this coffee makes it a great example of the clean, juicy, fruit forward naturals that Uganda is becoming known for.

Specifics – Darley Investments is a green coffee exporter based in Kampala, Uganda. We visited them in February 2024, to see their facilities, and also to head out into the field and meet the farmers and producers. Darley has a dry mill in Kampala where they grade and prepare coffees for export, and a drying station in Busoba, where they prepare some of their naturals before milling.

Uganda is building on its reputation for clean, juicy, fruit forward naturals and Buka Bula is our version of that. Sourced from two adjacent and high-altitude coffee areas Bukalasi and Bulambuli, we are extremely happy with the sweetness in this cup.

In 2019, producer Ben Mukhone saw an opportunity to locate a washing station in among some of the best coffee cherry in the mountain and this natural lot comes from 214 small holder farmers selling directly to the station.

Bukalasi is yet still harder to access, and its climate is cooled by the Kapkwai Forest, it has some of the sweetest coffees we’ve tasted on the mountain.

Ben Mukhone purchases the coffee cherry either at his washing station or a designated buying centre in Bukalasi before it is transported to the foot of the mountain, to a town called Busoba, where it is dried as a natural process.

This lot is a Natural – dried on raised beds, when coffee reaches 15% moisture content it is removed from the beds and placed into sealed containers for two days before finishing the drying process under shade.
